Kamal Haasan made his screen debut at the tender age of six with the film Kalathur Kannamma , for which he won the “Best Child Actor” award. This was followed by appearances as a child actor in movies with veteran actors of yester years such as MGR, Sivaji Ganesan and Gemini Ganesh

Kamal is a multi-faceted personality and he has exhibited his talents in all areas of film–making such as direction, singing, production, scripting, screenplay and special effects. When he started his career he had a keen interest in direction, but his well wishers and mentors in the movie industry turned his attention to acting. A major portion of his movie career was spent making largely successful commercial films, after which he moved on to do serious and realistic roles. Audiences find his filming technique to be technical, with much research being put into the role played and the storyline.

In his career as an actor, Kamal Haasan has donned a variety of interesting and versatile roles. It's been quite a range from the Hindu fundamentalist role in Hey Ram , a mentally affected Sri Lankan immigrant in Thenali , a disabled altruist in Anbe Sivam , underworld don in Nayagan , a modern young man turned into a rustic in Thevar Magan and many more add to the spectrum of characters.
